Spark plugs are one of the cheapest, easiest service items on your ATV, and they're also one of the most overlooked. A fresh set every 100 hours or so will keep your machine starting easily, idling smoothly and pulling cleanly. Skip them and you'll be chasing rough running that has nothing to do with the carb or injectors.
Why Spark Plugs Matter More on an ATV
An ATV engine works hard. Stop-start riding, wide-open throttle, river crossings, dust everywhere. That kind of work fouls plugs faster than a road bike or car would, so the service interval is shorter. A clean spark plug means strong ignition, complete combustion and the power you paid for.
Service Interval Guide
- Every 100 hours for utility and recreation use
- Every 50 hours for race machines or hard-working farm bikes
- Annually as a minimum, even on low-hour machines
Reading a Plug
Pull your old plug and have a look at the tip. The colour tells you a story:
- Light tan or grey: ideal, your engine is running clean
- Black and sooty: running rich, likely a fuel mixture issue
- White or blistered: running lean, check for air leaks or fuel delivery
- Oily and wet: oil getting past rings or valves, deeper investigation needed
Why NGK
NGK has been making spark plugs for over 80 years and supplies most of the major Japanese ATV manufacturers as OEM. The quality control is consistent, the heat ranges are reliable, and they last. When you replace a spark plug, you want to know the new one is at least as good as the original. NGK delivers that every time.
How to Replace a Spark Plug
- Let the engine cool fully.
- Clean around the plug with compressed air so no debris falls into the cylinder.
- Remove the spark plug cap, then unscrew the plug with a spark plug socket.
- Check the gap on the new plug against your manual's specs.
- Thread the new plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Torque to spec (typically 18 to 22 Nm for most ATV plugs).
- Refit the cap and start it up.
